HOW TO SELECT KNIFE SHARPENING STONE        HOW TO USE SHARPENING STONE

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Superabrasive tool (e.g. diamond wheel) has number of characteristics, important for productive work. Quality of the wheel can not be determined at the first sight and requires reasonable time to understand.  For example, in some factories it took up to 5 years to evaluate  consequences of  changing diamond powder's supplier for their wheels.

You are welcome to:
- learn important specs of  your tool here, or
- contact us for  comprehensive consultation.

We also offer pre-designed product manufacturing options, so you do not need to learn all technical details:
- Standard - as it should be, and as it presented in this store;
- Premium - higher productivity and lifespan, more attractive packaging;
- Expert     - innovative bonds for demanding applications.

TYPES OF DIAMONDS

Diamonds differ in strength and friability. The longer synthesis process takes places, the higher strength and size of diamond grain will be. These qualities are perfect for most diamond applications, except processing of metal, carbide and some other materials .

These (and some other materials) require relatively low diamond strength (for metals cubic boron nitride is recommended) and higher friability.

According to soviet standards diamonds are marked with so-called static strength, the lower number, the lower strength, e.g.: AC4, the most famous Poltava diamond powder, perfect for grinding of carbide and semi-conductors.

GRIT SIZE CONVERSION

Grit size notations vary depending on standard. For our product we are legally required to use Ukrainian state standard, which denotes grit size in microns: "the coarsest/the finest sizes" grains in powder's sample, e.g. 160/125.

Oppositely, US standard (known also as GRIT) denotes grit sizes in meshes per inch, consequently the less meshes are in inch, the coarser is the grit size.

GRIT CONCENTRATION

Cost of abrasive (diamond, cubic boron nitride (CBN)) is a significant part (e.g. 40 cents per carat for 40 cts wheel) of a cost of a wheel.

The higher concentration (weight by volume) of diamond in bond, the higher productivity and longer wheel's life.

Selection of grit concentration depends on type of tool, form and size of working surface, grit size, wear-resistance of a bond, and working conditions. Also, the smaller contact of processing surface with wheel, the higher may be the concentration.

TYPES OF BONDS

Resin bond has relatively low hardness and thermal stability. Resin bond is recommended for fine and finishing operations and does not require cooling.

Metal bond is harder and has high thermal stability. Metal bond is recommended for harder working conditions, with lower tolerances, and requires cooling.

Combined bond: our innovative solution, developed for sharpening stones, which combines best qualities of resin and metal bonds: high performance, mirror polishing and long tool life.
