CBN (cubic boron nitride, borazon, elbor, cubonite) is the hardest material after diamond. CBN is made from nitrogen and boron. CBN has a higher thermal stability than diamond and is therefore clearly preferable when sharpening HSS tools (lower wear of the CBN wheel).
CBN wheels are designed for sharpening and finishing of high-speed steels, as well as for rough and fine grinding of alloyed high-strength steels and alloys, with and without cooling.
