Operating Diamond & CBN Grinding Wheels

Diamond & CBN Grinding Wheels Guide | Operating & Safety Manuals

Ensure maximum efficiency, safety, and longevity of your abrasive tools by following these professional operating guidelines for diamond and CBN grinding wheels .

Mounting and Installation
Before operating, ensure that the grinding wheels are properly mounted on the machine spindles or mandrels. The spindle size must strictly match the inner diameter (bore size) of the wheel to prevent vibration and uneven wear.

Coolant Recommendations
For optimal performance, we highly recommend using grinding tools with a coolant
  1. Resin bonded wheels can be operated dry (without coolant).
  2. Note: Dry grinding reduces the wheel lifetime and increases the risk of thermal damage (overheating) to both the workpiece and the abrasive tool.
Recommended Peripheral Wheel Speeds
To achieve the best surface finish and prevent premature tool wear, maintain the following peripheral speeds :
  1. Synthetic diamond grinding wheels: 15–25 m/s
  2. CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) wheels: 30–35 m/s
Dressing and Truing Instructions
Perform truing and dressing using conventional abrasives strictly without coolant .
  1. Machine Mode (Recommended): Use conventional abrasive wheels
  2. Manual Mode: Use conventional abrasive sticks .
Grit Size & Material Rules:
  1. The grit size of the dressing tool must be 1–2 steps coarser than the grit of the diamond or CBN wheel .
  2. We recommend using vitrified bonded white alumina (WA) or green silicon carbide (GC) tools.
Operational Safety & Best Practices
  1. Safety Guards: Never operate a grinding wheel without proper protective equipment . Always ensure machine guards are securely in place.
  2. Smooth Infeed: The wheel must enter the processed material smoothly. Avoid any jerking movements, bumps, or abrupt impacts.
  3. Feed Rates: High-impact initial infeeds and excessive feed rates are strictly prohibited.
  4. Manufacturer Limits: Do not exceed the maximum working parameters (cross feed in mm/min and wheel speed in m/s) specified by the manufacturer.
